First Detection of Acinetobacter baumannii in Pediculus humanus capitis from Latin America

Several studies have documented the presence of Acinetobacter baumannii, a known multi-drug-resistant pathogen, in human head louse, Pediculus humanus capitis. Since no reports from countries Latin America been published, aim present study was to determine whether A. baumannii lice specimens collected this geographic region. Head Argentina, Colombia, and Honduras were analyzed. PCR assays performed confirm specimens’ species investigate DNA present. The products latter sequenced bacterial identity. Altogether, 122 pools analyzed, which two (1.64%) positive for baumannii’s DNA. had at poorest site Honduras. remaining negative. This is first report America. Further investigations are required elucidate these ectoparasites can serve as natural reservoirs or even effectively transmit humans.
